ABOUT OUR 2013 HONOREE
Each year, the El Paso Summer Music Festival honors a member of the community for his/her untiring efforts, support, and dedication to the arts in El Paso.
Join us in recognizing our 2013 Honoree.
Mr. Jaime Olivas was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. He graduated from Burges High School in 1967 and then attended the University of Texas at El Paso where he received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree. He continued his music education and obtained his Master of Music Education Degree from North Texas State University in 1985.
Mr. Olivas worked with the El Paso Independent School District from 1972 to 1982. He taught at Canyon Hills Middle School for three years, and then was assigned as Head Band Director at Irvin High School for seven years. Under his leadership, his bands received many awards in concert band, jazz band and marching band categories.
In 1982, Mr. Olivas went to work for The Bob Farley Music Company in El Paso, and in 1984 became co-owner of Capshaw-Olivas Music Company. In 2009, Mr. Olivas became the sole owner and President of Olivas Music Company and is currently operating two retail music store fronts servicing the El Paso, West Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico areas along with customers in the Dallas area.
Mr. Olivas, or “Jimmy” as he is known to most everyone, has also been the area representative for Fruhauf Uniforms Inc., since 1984. His territory includes El Paso, New Mexico and Arizona. He also operates Jimmy Olivas Uniforms with the sales of marching and concert uniforms and accessories in the area.
“Jimmy” is an active musician and private saxophone instructor in the El Paso-Las Cruces area. In 1985 he had the honor and privilege of performing with the Count Basie Band for performances in Carlsbad and El Paso. He has also performed for such artists as Nancy Wilson, Lou Rawls, Johnny Mathis, Roberta Flack, Al Jarreau, Michael McDonald, Wayne Newton, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Frankie Valle and The Four Seasons, Dionne Warwick and many others. Mr. Olivas was also the music arranger and conductor for the Miss Texas Pageant for six years during the late 80’s and early 90’s in El Paso and San Antonio, Texas. He continues to perform with visiting artists, various jazz groups in the area, as well as the Eklectic Big Band. He is also very active as an adjudicator and clinician. His smile, handshake, and music are known to many in the community, schools, and bands in the Border region.
